Pure Intention : Be Kind

“Be such a person and live such a life that if everyone were as you and every life was such as yours, this earth would be God’s paradise” Philip Brooks

Last Sunday, I headed into the city. What used to be a daily event, has now become rare occasion. One thing you can be sure of, is that when I do, I head to Farm Boy. For some reason, this grocery store always brings me great pleasure. Sergio just shakes his head, but some of you will understand exactly what I mean!

Business was humming and there were a lot of people coming in and out of the entrance. As I approached the building , a gentleman, wearing a winter jacket and looking terribly unsteady on his feet , was exiting the premises. His presence appeared to go un-noticed. Everyone was caught up in their own little world. As he approached, I asked him if I could give him a hand. Apparently I was standing right beside his car so, I offered to help him into his vehicle. Thankfully he motioned to the passenger’s side and his wife joined us, as I loaded her husband into the car.

Now this story was quite comical and sad all at the same time. Once I had tucked the husband into the car, safe and sound, the wife shut the door. She proceeded to tell me that they had just found out that he was suffering from a rare degenerative disease. This woman needed to talk. Keep in mind that it was quite warm out. The husband started knocking on the window, motioning to his wife that he wanted her attention. I suggested that maybe we should open the door, so she did. The husband, proceeded to try to free himself from the vehicle to remove his coat. We gave him a hand and removed the jacket. The woman started telling me how her husband had insisted on wearing his winter jacket. The two of us assisted her husband back into the vehicle and the woman shut the door. This woman needed to talk. Her poor husband started to tap on the window again, motioning to her that he wanted her to open the door. I said to her that maybe it would be a good idea to open the door which, she finally did. The husband looked at us with a grin on his face and suggested that “maybe we could roll down the window”? We all shared a laugh. In 5 minutes, this woman poured out her heart and soul to me. Her sadness about their current situation. The fact that her husband had just recently retired from a prestigious position in the government. Her fear of the future and how she was going to manage. The woman needed to talk and I was there to listen. As I left the two of them they both waved, and thanked me. It was one of those moments. To give is to receive.

“To be generous does not have to involve money …simply give a little of yourself ….a kind act, a helping hand, a few words of encouragement or a simple smile. True generosity is a gift from your heart to a heart of another where the intention behind the giving should always be to create happiness for the other unconditionally”. Roger Gabriel – Saturday Generosity June 11, 2022

Thinking back to that day, I realize something. My husband, and all three of my daughters would have done the exact same thing.

Now that warms my heart 🙂

  2. Good morning, Karen, I am just loving your writings, insights, and stories. I applaud your daily commitment to put thoughts and stories to “paper” in such a beautiful way.

My sister, Monique, has been visiting for 2 weeks. I’ve read your daily entries to her, aloud, every morning over coffee. It sparked meaningful conversation between us, often lingering way past coffee hour, on our road trips up island, over “chips and beer” hour, and on our sunset beach strolls. She flew back to Ottawa, yesterday, with the intention of becoming a new subscriber!

On another note, sharing space with her over the past two weeks reminded me of just how lovely it feels to have another person in the house that you love. A sleepy-eyed “good morning”, bookended by a tender, “sleep well” goodnight at the end of the day. This daily, loving exchange, a practice we observed and learned from my parents, is what I miss most about being on my own. That, and Farm Boy! 🤣

Have a wonderful day, Much love. XX

I had a feeling you were a Farm Boy frequent flyer. Another reason why we bonded so quickly 🙂
Some day I am going to make my way out west. Would so love to see you again .

  3. Correction :

    Last paragraph:

“This daily, loving exchange, (etc)…. Is what I miss most BEING on my own, as opposed to what I said…

what I miss most “about” being on my own
