Pure Intention : Embracing Womanhood

Written March 8, 2021

Happy International Women’s Day!

Throughout my life, I have had the privilege of connecting with a multitude of incredible women who have influenced the person I am today. When I think of these beautiful beings, countless words come to mind…inspiration; strength; resilience; courage; compassion; connectedness; camaraderie; laughter; creativity; brilliance and kindness, simply to name a few.

Growing up my mother had a wonderful group of friends. I have many fond memories of them getting together at our house to sew; knit; quilt; play bridge and garden. They loved to talk, laugh and share ideas about life and I enjoyed spending time with them. There was a strong bond between these women who were raising their families during the 60’s and 70’s. Looking back, I now realize this must have had its challenges. My mother raised 5 daughters and managed my father’s medical office which kept her incredibly busy, but she always made time for my siblings and I. I have great admiration for her incredible ability to juggle the stressors of life so gracefully. Our relationship was unique and for this I am truly grateful.

Thinking back to my high school days, there was one teacher in particular who comes to mind. She taught local history and was passionate about her work. At the time, I had zero appreciation for this woman’s knowledge and wisdom as I was far more interested in my social life. Oh to be young again and take more notice of the finer things in life. Years later, I bumped into her. Although she had aged considerably, now well into her nineties, I was struck by her beauty, elegance, and wit. I truly wished I had paid more attention to her years ago.

Fast forward to my career and I realize that all of my mentors have been women! Each of these individuals took a genuine interest in both my professional development and personal life. They were dynamic, brilliant, and lived their lives with purpose. I felt valued, respected, and was made to feel like what I said mattered. These women greatly contributed to the leader I have become and their strong influence will not be forgotten.

In my field of work, I have had countless opportunities to cross paths with women from all walks of life and many of different nationality. These close encounters touched my life. Their openness and willingness to share their stories contributed to the richness of my life. I am often reminded of their words of wisdom and although profoundly different in many ways, there is one thing that binds us together…womanhood.

I have three amazing daughters who are confident, loving, and compassionate.

I believe that their future is bright because of the collective strength and courage of so many women from years gone by.

Today, is International Women’s Day and I am proud of all the women in my life, past and present.

Lets celebrate being women and our incredible ability to keep our heads above water, even when the going gets rough!
